Miecznikowski
2018
Miecznikowski is about inheritance, exaltation, and the sexes.
Artist Statement
Miecznikowski is about inheritance, exaltation, and the sexes. This show brings my performative mentality to an object-based installation that explores paternal descent and identity.
I was born Kirstin Pilar Miecznikowski. Pronounced mee-esh-nuh-cow-skee. Miecz means sword in Polish.
The shape of this exhibition emerged to me last fall, with the approaching death of my father. However, this isn’t a show about death.
Pleasure dances across this body of work alongside humor, longing and exposure. The installation provides a theatrical backdrop for narratives of lineage outside of tradition. In the exhibition’s only self-portrait, I brandish a sword on a fantastical stage, an actor of ahistorical ownership.
In Miecznikowski you will find penetration, openness, power, interruption, weight, science and release.
The spiritual and the sexual often ask the same question of the viewer. Here, the blur of two seeks to disarm you. In Miecznikowski you will find penetration, openness, power, interruption, weight, science and release.
My artistic practice intertwines feminine and masculine characteristics in pursuit of wholeness.
