Artist Statement

Fortune Presents Gifts Not According To The Book is a (1990) song by Dead Can Dance. The lyrics interpret the poem “Da Bienes Fortuna”, written by 17th-century Spanish baroque poet, Luis de Góngora.

When you expect whistles it’s flutes
When you expect flutes it’s whistles

In this installation, I present two videos that once backdropped performances exhibited at Atlanta Contemporary. I toy with two notions of fortunate gifts – talent and paradise.

Cuando pitos, flautas,
cuando flautas, pitos.

Talent II is an extracted clip from a (1996) VHS tape of my college scholarship beauty pageant. It was first used to backdrop the talent portion of the (2011) performance, Contestant #12. The dance is slowed down from the original four minutes of Sarah Mclachlan’s song, “Fear”, and stretched into a 30-minute meditation of talent awakening to itself.

Paradise IV is one of the idyllic scenes in the 3-hour treadmill performance, Tropic of Gemini. This video is documentation of the (2016) hunt for paradise in Culebra, Puerto Rico.

It’s about getting curious about what’s right in front of you.

When you expect whistles it’s flutes
When you expect flutes it’s whistles
